While the term 'Expanded Cinema' originally included the widest possible array of materials and forms, much contemporary expanded work focuses specifically on small gauge (8mm and 16mm) film. Rather than an elegy to a dying medium, these works are signs of an ongoing commitment to it: a celebration of it's unique values as digital technology threatens to replace it. This work is part of a movement among like minded educators, students, and others to preserve small gauge film despite economic and social imperatives not to.
